Radix glycyrrhiza - Gan Cao: neutral, sweet, clears Heat and eliminates Toxins, tonifies Qi, moistens the Lungs, harmonizes the properties of other herbs.
Radix scutellaria - Huang Qin: cold, Bitter, clears Heat and dries Dampness, resolves toxicity, mostly from the lungs.
Radix platycodon - Jie Geng: neutral, acrid, bitter, vents and clears Heat from the Tai Yin, dispels the phlegm.

Radix Paeonia lactiflora - Bai Shao: cool, bitter, sour, nourishes the Xue and protects the Yin.
Rhizoma ligusticum chuanxiong - Chuan Xiong: warm, acrid, activates Qi, nourishes and invigorates Xue
Herba Mentha – Bo He: cool, acrid, releases the Exterior and dispels Wind Heat, benefits the throat and vents rashes.
Fructus Gardenia - Zhi Zi: cold, bitter, sedates Fire, drains Damp-Heat downwards, clears Heat and cools Xue.
Fructus Forsythia - Lian Qiao: cool, bitter, clears Heat and reduces toxicity
Radix angelica - Dang Gui: warm, sweet, acrid, tonifies Xue, invigorates circulation of Xue.
Gan Cao is used in large amount to clear the heat from the Tai Yin together with Jing Jie, to tonify the Qi and spleen and to harmonize the other herbs of the formula. Jing Jie, Fang Feng and Bo He disperse Heat, vent rashes and alleviate itching. Jie Geng is the best herb to open the Tai Yin and resolve the phlegm. Lian Qiao is an effective herb for clearing heat and eliminating toxins from both the interior and the exterior. Huang Qin and Zhi Zi drain damp-heat downwards and both herbs enter the Tai Yin channels. Da Huang can clear the Heat (stasis) and helps to eliminate (superficial) Xue stasis through its purgative action. Dang Gui and Chuang Xiong invigorate and harmonize Xue along with Bai Shao that has a Xue nourishing function. Bai Zhu with Gan Cao, tonifies the Qi to protect the Tai Yin from the harsh effects of the other herbs.
